HR 1906 Access to Inpatient Rehabilitation Therapy Act of 2015

We only have a short window of time to get support for H.R. 1906 the “Access to Inpatient Rehabilitation Therapy Act of 2015.” This Act, if passed, will force the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to include Recreational Therapy in the 3-hour rule!

What we need YOU to do NOW:

Step 1:  Contact your U.S. Congressperson’s office and find out who handles health care issues for the Congressperson.  You can reach your Congressperson’s office through the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at(202) 225-3121 or by going through the website:  http://www.house.gov/representatives/find/

Step 2:  Tell your Congressperson’s health staffer about H.R. 1906 and ask him or her to sign your Congressperson on as a co-sponsor in support of H.R.1906.   You can simply say:

“Hi my name is XXXX. I’m a recreational therapist at XXXX and I’m asking that Congressperson XXXX co-sponsor H.R. 1906 known as the Access to Inpatient Rehabilitation Therapy Act of 2015 that was introduced by Congressman Thompson and Congressman Butterfield. In 2010, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services restricted the type of therapies that a patient can receive in inpatient rehabilitation to only four services. As a result, patients are not receiving the appropriate mix of therapies they need for recovery. This bill will restore flexibility to the mix of therapies provided. I have a copy of the bill, as well as a support letter from the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation that I can send you, so you can take a closer look at it. Can you give me your email address so I can send it to you? Do you think Congressperson XXXX will be willing to co-sponsor the bill? When can you let me know his/her response?”

If they ask who on Capitol Hill is collecting cosponsor names, tell them to contact Matt Brennen (202) 225-5121 in Congressman Thompson’s office or Saul Hernandez (202) 225-3101 in Congressman Butterfield’s office.
Step 3:  Urge your colleagues, friends, family, clients/patients, employers, etc. to do the same.  We have a short window of opportunity and need as many Congressional cosponsors as possible-we need you and your colleagues to act now!  Anyone can call and make this request. They do not have to be a recreational therapist. You mom and dad can call. Your sister or brother can call. Your neighbors can call. This is YOUR profession – TAKE ACTION!  This will take the entire profession’s active involvement!
