North Star Behavioral Health: Palmer Residential Treatment Facility Therapeutic Recreation Internship Program Therapeutic Recreation Department’s Statement of Purpose: To provide high-quality, progressive, and innovative Therapeutic Recreation services that help to improve functional abilities, and develop an understanding of and an ability to implement a healthy leisure lifestyle upon discharge, and to provide opportunities for recreation participation within the community. About our Internship: We are looking for a highly motivated and positive individual to join us for our fifteen week TR internship. You will have opportunities to learn and assist with assessments, documentation, planning, implementing and evaluating Recreation Therapy groups with a focus on outdoor education and wilderness therapy. Our program serves adolescent boys 11-17 who have behavioral, psychiatric and mood disorders. You will have the opportunity to have an introduction to North Star’s other behavioral health facilities that include two acute care hospitals for preteens and adolescents and our adolescent/preteen girls and boys residential facility. In addition to our regular on site programming, you would also be involved with our special programming which includes: -High and Low Ropes Course -Monthly Off Site Camp Trips Throughout Alaska -Outdoor Recreation Outings -Community Re-entry Outings -Holiday Festivities *Housing and transportation is not provided. Job Description: The Therapeutic Recreation intern’s role is to assist in all aspects of the recreational therapy program. He/she will be supervised by a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, while performing various job tasks as outlined by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification. Based on experience, the intern will also serve in a leadership role, as a co-facilitator and/or facilitator. The intern will also be an asset to our team by providing information on current trends in therapeutic recreation services, through special projects and presentations.
