Recreation Therapy Internship Overview To gain experience in providing therapeutic recreation programs and interventions, as well as diversional recreation services, through implementation of structured and unstructured group and individual leisure programming. To gain experience in developing, plans, implementing, and evaluating program services. To gain experience in providing recreational case management services for a diverse patient population through assessment, intervention selection and implementation. To gain experience in evaluating individual care plans and programs for efficiency and effectiveness toward outcome achievement. To gain experience in interdisciplinary team process of care plan development and implementation. Internship Experience: (Student will gain knowledge and experience in the following areas) 1. Develop & implement a broad range of therapeutic and diversional recreation services and programs. 2. Manage caseload, as assigned by Recreation Therapy Internship Coordinator, to include conducting assessments, developing and implementing appropriate intervention plans, documenting and evaluating outcomes, and goal writing. Actively participates in planning and coordinating treatment goals with interdisciplinary team members. 3. Compliance with documentation guidelines and deadlines. 4. Develops treatment protocols, and other supportive tasks as assigned. 5. Provides individual recreation therapy services based on individual needs. 6. Creates and maintains a safe and positive environment for participants. 7. Completes internship requirements toward preparing to take the certification exam for CTRS. 8. Attends in-services, training and staff meetings. Provide in-service training as assigned. 9. Commits to upholding in action and in deed, the service Excellence ideals of the agency and the department. 10. Develop and maintain an excellent rapport with patients, visitors and coworkers. 11. Carries out all other duties as assigned by the Recreation Therapy Internship Coordinator and University Supervisor. Agency Expectations of Intern: WORKING CONDITIONS AND DEMANDS: 1. Flexibility with work hours and job duty assignments. 2. Obtains/maintains certification in CPR and CPI (offered at Hickory Trail Hospital if needed). 3. Complete and maintain compliance with Hickory Trail Hospital Healthstream trainings. 4. Has a clear and understandable communication skill in routine and emergency situations. 5. Ability to be on one’s feet for extended periods of time, possibly the duration of an 8-hour shift. 6. Ability to stoop, bend, push, pull, crouch, kneel, balance and squat for up to 20-40 minutes during activity. APTITUDES: Sound judgment and a mature attitude. Legible handwriting and excellent command of written and spoken language. Exceptional listening skills and a proactive approach to communications and problem resolution. Effective organizational style and the ability to “multitask” within varying degrees of direct supervision. Excellence in stewardship of agency resources. Comfort in a diverse cultural environment and strong interpersonal skills. Outgoing and friendly persona and solid program leadership skills. “Person First” attitude, with an extraordinary level of patience. Basic computer literacy and skills TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Enrolled in a 4-year degree program, or higher, in the field of Therapeutic Recreation from an accredited college or university with the status of a current Junior or Senior. Solid academic standing with strong references from university internship supervisor. Eligibility to become certified in CPR and CPI.
