Thank you for expressing your interest in furthering your educational experience by completing your Therapeutic Recreation Internship at Eastern State Hospital, managed by UKHealthcare. The new Eastern State Hospital opened in September 2013, providing recovery-focused, individualized care in a supportive environment that features the latest in treatment and technology. The mission of Eastern State Hospital is to help people with behavioral health needs grow and recover to live a more meaningful life. Population: We are a 239-bed facility that provides an extensive range of inpatient mental health services, both acute and long-term, to adults living within the 50 counties surrounding and including Fayette County. In addition, we also provide specialized inpatient rehabilitation for Acquired Brain Injury and house a Long Term Care unit for specialized geriatric care. The hospital includes nine patient care units of up to 28 beds in a mix of private and semi-private rooms. Accreditation: Eastern State Hospital is a nationally accredited hospital. It meets the standards of the Joint Commission, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and the Kentucky State Licensing Regulation Division. The requirements and job description of the Therapeutic Recreation Internship program at Eastern State Hospital are in accordance with and meet all requirements set forth by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification. Services Offered: Eastern State Hospital operates a recovery-based program provided by an interdisciplinary team of professionals including nursing, social work, rehabilitation services, psychology, drug and alcohol counselors, and peer mentors. Services are provided both on and off the unit depending on the needs and level of support required for the individual The Recovery Mall is located on the first and second floors and offers individualized services designed to promote recovery, wellness and transition to the community. The wide range of services includes a gym/fitness center, resource library, retail space, and many groups led by a variety of qualified mental health professionals to address therapeutic goals. Therapeutic Recreation is offered at Eastern State as an important component of our recovery-based services. Therapeutic Recreation Interventions are implemented by qualified staff and directed toward restoring and maintaining optimal levels of physical and psychosocial functioning. Types of Services/programs offered: All individuals at Eastern State Hospital will have the opportunity to participate in a Therapeutic Recreation Assessment, Recovery Mall groups, Evening/Weekend Activities, Unit Groups, Individual Services (as needed), Community Reintegration, and Leisure Education and Resource Provision. Practice Guidelines: Groups and interventions are all evidence-based and may include but are not limited to: Education, Art, Dance, Music, Sports, Games, Special Events, Cultural Celebrations, Cognitive Activities, and Diversional Activities. Interdisciplinary Staffing: Our Rehabilitation staff is comprised of 3 full time CTRS (Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist) professionals, as well as Recreation Leaders, Mental Health Associates, Occupational Therapists, Music Therapists, Art Therapists, Drug and Alcohol Counselors, and Peer Support Specialists. As an intern you will be supervised by a CTRS, but will have the opportunity to collaborate and work with many of these disciplines as well as psychologists, social workers, chaplains, psychiatrists, nursing staff, and other support personnel.
