Breaking Down the Triple Threat Barrier: The Effect of Identity Development and the Socialization Process of Female Veterans with Disabilities in Adaptive Sports

Overview: The session will focus on the self-identity and social theories associated with the triple threat phenomenon. The triple threat phenomenon highlights the barriers appointed to female veterans with disabilities participating in adaptive sports. “Breaking Down the Triple Threat Barrier” will explore the following: why veteran females with disabilities struggle to find adaptive sport opportunities and continue to face challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated society as well as provide a closer look into a disability in an able-bodied culture. The session will identify the roles in which agents and agencies play in the development of the female veteran. As well as the values, morals, norms, and perceptions in which female veterans with disabilities attach to self-identity and social structure. An explanation of the Leisure Ability, Flourishing Through Leisure and the Health Promotion Models will be used to explore theories to gain a better understanding of the foundational knowledge and resources for female veterans with a disability.
