The American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) is the largest national membership organization representing the interests and needs of recreational therapists. Recreational therapists are healthcare providers who use recreational therapy interventions for improved functioning of individuals with illness or disabling conditions. ATRA was incorporated in the District of Columbia in 1984 as a non-profit, grassroots organization in response to growing concern about the dramatic changes in the healthcare industry. As a result of this response, ATRA has grown from a membership of sixty individuals in June 1984 to over 2,200 in 2013.
The mission of the American Therapeutic Recreation Association is to serve as a member-driven association that collectively supports the recreational therapy profession.
The vision of the American Therapeutic Recreation Association is to be the premiere professional membership association representing recreational therapists, consumers and stakeholders.

2014 TR/RT Month Items
We've received shipments of several new items already, and have up to twenty-two promotional items for sale right now.
ATRA would like to feature real pictures of TR/RT in action throughout the website. We hope to be able to cover the breadth of the field including a variety of clients, CTRSs, activities, settings, ages, culture and socioeconomic backgrounds and geographical locations. If you have any high quality pictures (preferably 1110 X 580px@72dpi) for which you have signed photo releases that you’d like us to consider featuring on the website, please submit jpg version to firstname.lastname@example.org by February 14, 2014. Please be aware that if we decide to use your picture(s), all individuals, and/or their guardians as appropriate, in the photo will need to sign an ATRA photo release. Additionally, the agency submitting the picture will need to sign a release indicating that they have signed release forms from all individuals in the photograph and that the agency gives ATRA permission to use the photograph. All pictures used on the website will be credited to the agency that provides the pictures if the agency so desires. Any questions, please contact Jo-Ellen Ross, ATRA Member-at-Large Board Member at email@example.com.
