Falls Prevention for Older Adults in Recreational Therapy

The Falls Prevention for Older Adults Intensive equips recreational therapists (RTs) with advanced competencies in fall prevention assessment, intervention, treatment planning, evaluation, and documentation in residential, home, and community-based settings to address and reduce the risk of falling for older adults. The Falls Prevention Intensive prepares RTs to implement fall prevention interventions to reduce the risk of falls and, thus, improve the functioning and quality of life of older adults who are at risk of falling.

Course Content

The Falls Prevention for Older Adults in Recreational Therapy Intensive contains 6 comprehensive, interactive, multi-media learning modules.

  • CEU Information

    The Falls Prevention Intensive is pre-approved for 0.7 CEUs and Geriatrics Speciality Designation by NCTRC.

  • Module 1

    An introduction to fall prevention, including an examination of statistics on falls, risks of falling, and the direct and indirect impacts on older adults. 

  • Module 2

    Focus on assessing older adults who are at risk of falling. Several standardized assessment tools will be shared, including a review of the assessment, demonstration of implementing the assessment, and instruction on scoring the assessment. 

  • Module 3

    Planning interventions related to fall prevention. Connection will be made from the assessment module directly to goal writing. Review of assessment data and individual tools will be connected directly to potential goals for older adults at risk of falling.

  • Module 4

    Participants will learn about specific exercises and activities designed to improve the strength, flexibility, range of motion, and endurance of muscles and joints, thereby reducing the risk of falls among older adults. Specific exercises will be reviewed, as well as any necessary adaptations.

  • Module 5

    Continuation of the APIED process, focusing on evaluation and documentation, including ongoing monitoring, progress notes, how to evaluate outcomes, and resources for discharge from a fall prevention program.

  • Module 6

    Wrap-up and review of fall prevention will be presented. Discussion will also include how to advocate for recreational therapy to develop and facilitate a fall prevention program, resources to help develop a program, and considerations for program development like staffing, budgeting, equipment, and space.
